Veteran's Day

From our earliest days, the University of Northern Iowa has served and supported veterans and their families. What we now know as the University of Northern Iowa was originally established as an orphanage to care for the children of Civil War veterans who perished while protecting the United States.

As a university with a strong foundation of respect and support for our nation's veterans and their families, it is fitting that we take time as Veteran's Day approaches to show our continuing appreciation for the service members and veterans who are serving or have served our country.

Please join the Panther Family in saying thank you to those students, staff and faculty members, alumni and community partners who have served or are serving our country in the armed services. They have given a great deal to protect the freedoms we too often take for granted. At UNI, we are committed to offering a warm and inclusive living, learning and working environment for all, and our nation's service members, veterans and their families are integral to the cultural vitality of our campus community.

The UNI Veterans Association is sponsoring events this coming week in honor of our nation's service members and veterans. I encourage us all to participate and show our support.

  • Military Challenge—Wednesday, November 8, 11:00am-1:00pm, in the Maucker Union. The UNI Veterans Association will be hosting trivia and sponsoring a Plinko board.
  • 'Almost Sunrise' Screening at Hawkeye Community College-Thursday, November 9, 11:00am-2:30pm. This film is about two young veterans who reflect on life after haunting combat experiences in Iraq.
  • Flags on Campanile—Friday, November 10, 7:00am-4:00pm. The UNI Veterans Association and the UNI ROTC place flags near the UNI Campanile. All are welcome to come and observe the display.
  • Veteran's Day Program—Friday, November 10, 3:00pm, in the Rod Library. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from student veterans and observe a photo display.

To our Panther service members, veterans and their families-Thank You! You make us all Panther Proud!

Thank you,

Mark A. Nook
