Passing of Harry Brod

Dear UNI Family,

It is with great sadness that we share with you the loss of a Panther family member: Harry Brod, professor of sociology.

Harry joined the UNI faculty in 1999. He was first an associate professor in the philosophy and world religions department in 1999, was awarded full professor in 2003, and moved to the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology in the fall of 2013.

At UNI, he was heavily involved in the Women's and Gender Studies Program, the Center for Violence Prevention and the National Coalition Building Institute. He directed the humanities major from 2000-2001 and from 2012-2013 and the University Honors Program from 2001-2003. Harry was also involved in the local community, serving on the Iowa Humanities Board of Directors, as well as nationally in the discipline as co-editor of “Men and Masculinities.”

Harry was widely recognized as a founding figure of the field of men's studies, also known as masculinity studies. His leadership is recognized in moving the field away from a monolithic concept of “masculinity” to embrace diversity at its core, to study men and masculinities as they vary by race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, religion, able-bodiedness and other categories.

Harry's passion for issues relating to diversity and inclusion, his thoughtfulness, and leadership inside and outside of the classroom will be greatly missed by his students, his colleagues in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology, and all of us who have had the pleasure to know or work with him.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, at the West Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 225 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Harry's obituary can be found on the West Laurel Hill Funeral Home website.
