Congratulations to Truman Scholar Rachael Johnson

Dear Faculty and Staff,

I am writing to extend a very well deserved congratulations to Rachael Johnson, a UNI junior majoring in elementary and middle level education from Sioux City. She is one of only 62 students nationwide to be named a 2017 Truman Scholar.

Image removed. This prestigious award is given each year by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation to extraordinary undergraduates in their third year of college who are committed to careers in public service. Rachael is the first student from UNI to receive the Truman Scholarship since the foundation awarded its first scholarship in the 1977-78 academic year.

The Truman Scholarship will provide Rachael up to $30,000 for graduate study and the opportunity to participate in professional development programming to help prepare her for a career in public service leadership. After graduating from UNI, she hopes to continue her studies in higher, postsecondary and continuing education and eventually wants to work on policy research, reform and implementation.

Since her freshman year on the UNI campus, Rachael has been involved in a variety of college, civic and government activities. She served on the Northern Iowa Student Government as a senator for the College of Education and is currently a member of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

This prestigious honor is also a testament to our commitment to providing a rigorous and supportive learning environment that helps students reach their educational, professional and personal life goals. Thank you for supporting all of our students.

Congratulations, Rachael!
