Academic Positioning Update on Nursing

Monday, May 16th, 2022

Dear Campus Community,

Congratulations on an outstanding semester and thank you for all your hard work. Before you begin your summer plans, we want to send an update on progress towards recommendations on goal #1 made by the Health Sciences Working Group.

The Academic Positioning Steering Committee and university leadership have accepted the Focused Working Group (FWG) recommendation to pursue Nursing as a potentially viable program at UNI. To begin the process, we will move forward with identifying a Chief Academic Nurse Administrator (CANA) to help assess the viability and best path forward for a Nursing program at UNI. The position of CANA is a role required by accrediting bodies in nurse education during program conceptualization. The position will be a two-year term to ensure the person is able to meaningfully engage with campus stakeholders and regional partners to assess the needs of our students, academic and support structures, and Iowa’s healthcare system.

With the support of the CANA, campus stakeholders and regional partners, we will thoroughly explore options on how best to bring the nursing program to fruition. The Provost's Office is in the process of creating a CANA position description and forming a search committee to launch the process this summer. As the search progresses, we will send out periodic updates via email.

Please watch for additional updates from the Academic Positioning steering committee as the FWG teams finalize each of their recommendations. Enjoy the warmth and take some time to recharge your batteries.

Thank you,
